About Us

A Good Yarn is owned by Linda Stanyon Johnson, previous owner of The Woolgathering, on New York City's Upper East Side, for 10 years. Our studio is at 200 Browertown Road, in Woodland Park, New Jersey (the name changed from West Paterson a few years back), just off Interstate 80, Route 46 and the Garden State Parkway. Call 845-913-6547 for an appointment. We're generally available on short notice weekdays and often on weekends as well. We specialize in designing new projects, with a large selection of yarn, patterns and pattern books, and a huge selection of notions including one of the largest assortments of antique buttons in the New York metro area, which are not for sale on the Web site. We also specialize in writing patterns to your dimensions, to insure a great fit.

On the Web, we offer more than a dozen lines of yarn, notions, dozens of free vintage patterns, several kits, pattern books, the largest archive of knitting images anywhere on the Web, and a long list of our favorite blogs and links. Besides all of the above, our store in Woodland Park offers knitting lessons and a pleasant place to knit with expert assistance readily at hand.

Come See Us in Person

We always welcome new customers in person at our studio in Woodland Park, and we'll try to arrange an appointment even if you call at the last minute (though it always helps to give us a little advance notice). We specialize in helping you find a new project and designing it to fit. We have literally thousands of patterns (including every issue of Vogue Knitting back to the 1930s) plus a huge selection of vintage buttons and buckles for just the right finishing touch.

Making A Purchase

To make a purchase from our online store, use the dropdown menus on the home page to browse our catalogue. There are small thumbnail pictures of each type and color of yarn, which enlarge when you roll your cursor over them.

When you're ready to make a purchase, click on the button to select the color and add the item to your online shopping cart. You can either then click the "Checkout" button to add shipping and credit card information, or continue shopping. But adding items to your shopping cart does not commit you to purchasing them. At any time you can remove or add other items to your cart and check the total bill before deciding to actually make a purchase. You can view the items in your cart at any time by clicking on the "view shopping cart" link.

When you are finished shopping, click the "Checkout" link. You will then be taken to a page where you will enter the address to which you want your order sent. We will use this information to calculate the cost of shipping and postage for your order. Only after you view this information and confirm its accuracy will we actually place your order. At that point, you will be transferred to our secure server, where you will enter your credit card details. All of our credit card transactions are handled by the same folks who also own PayPal, the largest Web-based payment company.

You will receive an e-mail confirming your order and delivery details.

How to Pay

For online orders, we accept PayPal or debit or credit card payments via Visa or MasterCard. We do not accept American Express. You may send a check by mail if you prefer not to pay online. (But if you are paying by check, please include your order in a note accompanying your check -- do not use the online order system).

If you are ordering from outside the United States, your credit card company will convert your bill into your own currency.

Postage and Packaging

For packages shippied in the U.S., we charge a flat $5 for postage and handling. We ship U.S. Postal Service, Priority Mail, and whenever possible, try to get your package in the mail on the day it is ordered. For packages shipped to Canada, we charge a $10 flat rate, and for non-U.S. or Canada, a flat rate of $25.

Delivery Times

We try to mail all orders on the day they are placed. If you have not received your order (or an e-mail explaining why there is a delay) within 7 working days of placing it at our Web site, please contact us.  International orders usually take longer to arrive.

Out-of-Stock Items

We try to keep our inventory information up to date, but occasionally items are out of stock. If that occurs, we will contact our yarn distributors to get an estimate of when a new supply will be delivered, and notify you, so you can decide whether to wait or make a purchase elsewhere.  You always have the option to cancel your order if you would rather not wait.

Credit Card Security

All credit card transactions are handled by a secure server maintained by VeriSign, one of the top credit card security firms on the Web. Verisign is owned by eBay, the online auction company.

Returns & Refunds

Yarns and notions (in original condition) may be returned for store credit within 30 days of purchase. Books and patterns, however, are not returnable. We do not pay postage and shipping for returned items, unless they are defective (see below).

To return goods, package them securely and send them to A Good Yarn, 200 Browertown Road, Woodland Park, New Jersey 07424.

Defective goods:

We take great care to examine all of our goods before they are shipped, but should any item prove defective, we will replace or refund the value of the goods in full.  Please return defective goods to A Good Yarn, 200 Browertown Road, Woodland Park, New Jersey 07424.  We will, of course, refund the full cost of return postage.
