About Us

A Good Yarn is owned by Linda Stanyon Johnson, previous owner of The Woolgathering, on New York City's Upper East Side, for 10 years. We're located at 200 Browertown Road, in West Paterson, New Jersey, just off Interstate 80, Route 46 and the Garden State Parkway. Call 845-913-6547 for an appointment.

On the Web, we offer yarn, free patterns, kits, books, our favorite knitting images and a long list of our favorite blogs and links. Besides all of the above, our store in West Paterson offers knitting classes, workshops and a pleasant place to knit with expert assistance readily at hand.

Making A Purchase

To make a purchase from our online store, use the dropdown menus on the home page to browse our catalogue. There are small thumbnail pictures of each type and color of yarn, which enlarge when you roll your cursor over them.

When you're ready to make a purchase, click on the button to select the color and add the item to your online shopping cart. You can either then click the "Checkout" button to add shipping and credit card information, or continue shopping. But adding items to your shopping cart does not commit you to purchasing them. At any time you can remove or add other items to your cart and check the total bill before deciding to actually make a purchase. You can view the items in your cart at any time by clicking on the "view shopping cart" link. 

When you are finished shopping, click the "Checkout" link. You will then be taken to a page where you will enter the address to which you want your order sent. We will use this information to calculate the cost of shipping and postage for your order. Only after you view this information and confirm its accuracy will we actually place your order. At that point, you will be transferred to our secure server, where you will enter your credit card details. We use VeriSign, one of the largest Internet credit card security sites, to process our credit card orders.

You will receive an e-mail confirming your order and delivery details.

How to Pay

For online orders, we accept debit or credit card payments via Visa or MasterCard. We do not accept American Express. You may send a check by mail if you prefer not to pay online. (But if you are paying by check, please include your order in a note accompanying your check -- do not use the online order system).

If you are ordering from outside the United States, your credit card company will convert your bill into your own currency. 

Postage and Packaging

We charge a flat $5 for postage and handling. We ship U.S. Postal Service, Priority Mail, and whenever possible, try to get your package in the mail on the day it is ordered.

Delivery Times

We try to mail all orders on the day they are placed. If you have not received your order (or an e-mail explaining why there is a delay) within 7 working days of placing it at our Web site, please contact us.  International orders usually take longer to arrive.

Out-of-Stock Items

We try to keep our inventory information up to date, but occasionally items are out of stock. If that occurs, we will contact our yarn distributors to get an estimate of when a new supply will be delivered, and notify you, so you can decide whether to wait or make a purchase elsewhere.  You always have the option to cancel your order if you would rather not wait.

Credit Card Security

All credit card transactions are handled by a secure server maintained by VeriSign, one of the top credit card security firms on the Web.

Returns & Refunds

Yarns and notions (in original condition) may be returned for store credit within 30 days of purchase. Books and patterns, however, are not returnable. We do not pay postage and shipping for returned items, unless they are defective (See below).

To return goods, package them securely and send them to A Good Yarn, 357 Grand Street, Newburgh, N.Y. 12550.

Defective goods:

We take great care to examine all of our goods before they are shipped, but should any item prove defective, we will replace or refund the value of the goods in full.  Please return defective goods to A Good Yarn, 357 Grand Street, Newburgh, N.Y. 12550.  We will, of course, refund the full cost of return postage.

Our retail store is open by apointment only, but we monitor the Web site and office telephone seven days a week. If we are unable to answer your call, please leave a message.

We collect information about you only to process your order. We will not e-mail you in the future unless you have given us your consent.
